Last week I spotted a new ant colony at our backyard  and I decided to follow it to see if it will make it. At the moment all of the yard is controlled  by lasius niger so it does not look good for the newcomer. The colony is quite passive at the moment and I have not spotted any lasius flavus anywhere else at the yard.

Google image search is quite good: lasius flavus and lasius niger. From my article there are links to pictures of each colonies I took, but they are not very accurate. And for Ray Monty, I think I'll make an article with my best pictures about Finnish main ants.

Where is a good place to see a photo of the difference in these ants?

Here in my area we have a few, lasius nigers. We also have a few lasius whiters. The red ants don't harm you and the yellow ones work very hard. The browns are all over the place and they like to make baby ants. I have not seen too many of them on the road, I guess they are running out of gas!
