Last week I spotted a new ant colony at our backyard and I decided to follow it to see if it will make it. At the moment all of the yard is controlled by lasius niger so it does not look good for the newcomer. The colony is quite passive at the moment and I have not spotted any lasius flavus anywhere else at the yard.
Picture: In July 2008 there are two kinds of ant colonies spotted at our backyeard: several lasius niger nests and one small lasius flavus colony.

Google image search is quite good: lasius flavus and lasius niger. From my article there are links to pictures of each colonies I took, but they are not very accurate. And for Ray Monty, I think I'll make an article with my best pictures about Finnish main ants.
